What does a filter press do?
A filter press is a pressure filtration system used to separate solids from liquids in a slurry.
Slurry is pumped into a series of chambers formed between filter plates. Each plate is covered with filter cloth. As pressure builds, the liquid phase passes through the cloth and exits as filtrate, while the solids are retained inside the chambers. Over the cycle, those solids build up and are compressed into a semi-dry filter cake.
Once the cycle is complete, the press opens and the filter cake is discharged for handling, disposal or further processing.
For mining, quarrying and industrial sites, a filter press is mainly used to:
- reduce the moisture content of tailings, sludge or process solids
- recover water for reuse
- reduce the volume and weight of waste material
- improve downstream handling, transport and disposal
- produce a more consistent solids product than basic settling or screening
